My Homemade Apple Chips

Today I was craving for a snack while studying and I figured out why not make healthy chips? Are you asking yourself what I am talking about and how the hell chips can be healthy?! Well, continue reading and I will show you how ;)

Take two or three ripe apples (depends on how big they are).

First remove the core from the apple.

Next cut the apples into round slices.

Apply baking paper on the baking sheet and place the apple slices on it.

Sprinkle the slices with cinnamon.

Preheat the oven to 100°C and bake the apple slices for one hour. Then remove them from the oven and flip them over. The apples will be floppy but don't worry, they will crisp up later.
Return the apple slices into the oven and bake for another hour. Turn the oven off and let cool completely inside the oven (this is when they will crisp up).
Once they've cooled, enjoy! This is perfect as a totally guilt free snack while studying ;)

There are various ways you can serve them. I also tried them with yogurt, cinnamon and cashews and I can totally recommend it!

Most fascinating places on earth!

Once again I am fascinated by the wonderful places that characterize our world! I am determined to visit the most famous and amazing places at least once in my life. My greatest wish would be to travel around the world, visit all the sights from the various countries. Getting to know the country's culture means to live it and to immerse oneself in the culture. I love different ways of life and I totally could picture myself discovering new and inspiring things.

Here are some of the most breathtaking places I would like to visit:

Flower Fields, Holland

The striking colors of the flowers are a typical sight in Holland during the spring. The bright red, pink, yellow and blue colors are overwhelmingly beautiful and are definitely a must see!

Salar De Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers. Isn't it impressive?!

Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska

It is a glacier that's approximately 19 kilometers long and is located in Medndenhall Valley in Alaska.

Bamboo Forest, Japan

The beautiful Bamboo Forest of Kyoto is both peaceful and naturally aesthetic. Bamboo is an exotic, giant grass and a rich and fascinating part of Japanese culture.

Naica Mine, Mexico

The Naica Mine is a working mine that is best known for its extraordinary selenite crystals that are discovered during mining operations.

Mount Roraima, South America

Mount Roraima is a truly remarkable creation as it has 400-meter tall cliffs on all sides. It is the tallest of the Pakaraima Chain in South Africa and borders Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Many of the plants that grow on the top of this mountain are found nowhere else on earth.

Pamukkale, Turkey

This beautiful and unique place is open to visitor, making it seen as one of the top unusual tourist destinations in the word.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

The Plitvice Lakes, located in Plitvice Lakes National Park, are one of the first places to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year over 1.2 million tourists from all over the world travel to Croatia to admire the lakes. What makes the cascades so special is that they are all connected and follow the same flow. It is a remarkable and unique sight to see and I can definitely recommend visiting it because this is one of my To-Visit-Places I've already seen. It's well worth visiting!

This are the Plitvice Lakes in winter.

As I already mentioned, these are just a few places I would like to see. There is an infinite number of amazing places in the world that are breathtaking and worth a visit :)

Gulliver's Travels

If you are insterested in my presentation on June 20th I would suggest reading this short summary of the four voyages of Gulliver. It will help you to understand what I am going to talk about, as I will mainly refer to the cultural influences on this writing.

Shot Plot:

Gulliver’s Travels recounts the story of Lemuel Gulliver, a practical-minded Englishman trained as a surgeon who takes to the seas when his business fails. In a deadpan first-person narrative that rarely shows any signs of self-reflection or deep emotional response, Gulliver narrates the adventures that befall him on these travels.

Gulliver’s adventure in Lilliput begins when he wakes after his shipwreck to find himself bound by innumerable tiny threads and addressed by tiny captors who are in awe of him but fiercely protective of their kingdom. They are not afraid to use violence against Gulliver, though their arrows are little more than pinpricks. But overall, they are hospitable, risking famine in their land by feeding Gulliver, who consumes more food than a thousand Lilliputians combined could. Gulliver is taken into the capital city by a vast wagon the Lilliputians have specially built. He is presented to the emperor, who is entertained by Gulliver, just as Gulliver is flattered by the attention of royalty. Eventually Gulliver becomes a national resource, used by the army in its war against the people of Blefuscu, whom the Lilliputians hate for doctrinal differences concerning the proper way to crack eggs. But things change when Gulliver is convicted of treason for putting out a fire in the royal palace with his urine and is condemned to be shot in the eyes and starved to death. Gulliver escapes to Blefuscu, where he is able to repair a boat he finds and set sail for England.
After staying in England with his wife and family for two months, Gulliver undertakes his next sea voyage, which takes him to a land of giants called Brobdingnag. Here, a field worker discovers him. The farmer initially treats him as little more than an animal, keeping him for amusement. The farmer eventually sells Gulliver to the queen, who makes him a courtly diversion and is entertained by his musical talents. Social life is easy for Gulliver after his discovery by the court, but not particularly enjoyable. Gulliver is often repulsed by the physicality of the Brobdingnagians, whose ordinary flaws are many times magnified by their huge size. Thus, when a couple of courtly ladies let him play on their naked bodies, he is not attracted to them but rather disgusted by their enormous skin pores and the sound of their torrential urination. He is generally startled by the ignorance of the people here—even the king knows nothing about politics. More unsettling findings in Brobdingnag come in the form of various animals of the realm that endanger his life. Even Brobdingnagian insects leave slimy trails on his food that make eating difficult. On a trip to the frontier, accompanying the royal couple, Gulliver leaves Brobdingnag when his cage is plucked up by an eagle and dropped into the sea.
Next, Gulliver sets sail again and, after an attack by pirates, ends up in Laputa, where a floating island inhabited by theoreticians and academics oppresses the land below, called Balnibarbi. The scientific research undertaken in Laputa and in Balnibarbi seems totally inane and impractical, and its residents too appear wholly out of touch with reality. Taking a short side trip to Glubbdubdrib, Gulliver is able to witness the conjuring up of figures from history, such as Julius Caesar and other military leaders, whom he finds much less impressive than in books. After visiting the Luggnaggians and the Struldbrugs, the latter of which are senile immortals who prove that age does not bring wisdom, he is able to sail to Japan and from there back to England.

Finally, on his fourth journey, Gulliver sets out as captain of a ship, but after the mutiny of his crew and a long confinement in his cabin, he arrives in an unknown land. This land is populated by Houyhnhnms, rational-thinking horses who rule, and by Yahoos, brutish humanlike creatures who serve the Houyhnhnms. Gulliver sets about learning their language, and when he can speak he narrates his voyages to them and explains the constitution of England. He is treated with great courtesy and kindness by the horses and is enlightened by his many conversations with them and by his exposure to their noble culture. He wants to stay with the Houyhnhnms, but his bared body reveals to the horses that he is very much like a Yahoo, and he is banished. Gulliver is grief-stricken but agrees to leave. He fashions a canoe and makes his way to a nearby island, where he is picked up by a Portuguese ship captain who treats him well, though Gulliver cannot help now seeing the captain—and all humans—as shamefully Yahoolike. Gulliver then concludes his narrative with a claim that the lands he has visited belong by rights to England, as her colonies, even though he questions the whole idea of colonialism.

Plastic Planet

After having thought and read much about the protection of the environment and the various organizations to save our planet, I remembered a movie I've watched in High School about these topics. The movie is called Plastic Planet and it's a documentary about the issues we have with plastic.

Plastic definitely has become a part of our daily lives. It surrounds us. The plastic industries make 800 billion euros pro year. Did you know that the amount of plastic that is produced since the beginning of the plastic age is enough to wrap the entire planet in plastic bags six times over? Did you know that a piece of plastic takes up to 500 years to deteriorate in the ground ou water system?
The movie represents a different and personal view of Werner Boote who takes us in an overwhelming and shocking world, full of facts about the controversial and fascinating material. It is a journey around the world in order to explore whether this curious material is a danger to human health. In addition to that studies indicate that this material could lead to a variety of health problems in humans. In 14 countries he speaks about the danger of continued reliance on plastic, as well as alternatives that could help us to live in a cleaner world, and a healthier population.

I found an online site where you can watch the movie for free :)

Save Our Planet!

We live in a wonderful world full of life, full of color, full of beauty, but in recent years our world has been devastated by hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and droughts. What does the future hold for planet earth, the place we all call home? No one of us has the solution of how to fix the holes in our ozone layer or how to bring back an animal, now extinct. Due to the fact that nobody knows how to fix it, we must stop breaking it! Climate change could destroy the world that we live in but we can prevent this if we all work together. There is still time for us to save our world! Solar panels, wind farms and underwater turbines are used to produce renewable energy but there are still many more things we can do in everyday life to help our planet. There are in fact many simple everyday things that we can do with our families around our home to help the environment.

  1. Reduce the amount of waste we produce.
  2. Many items from our homes can be recycled by looking what we can reuse. (Jars, cans, bottles, bags...) Make sure you use your recycle bin EVERY TIME.
  3. Plant a tree in our garden.
  4. Grow our own vegetables and fruits.
  5. Turn always the water off when we don't need it. (When applying shampoo or while brushing our teeth)
  6. Use reusable bags instead of plastic bags - they can be recycled.
  7. Take a bus, bike or walk more often.

All these little things we can do in our daily lifes will help to save the environment. Tell everyone to do those small things that count. In my life I have dreamt of seeing the great herd of wild animals, jungles and rain forests full of tropical birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see. We must take it step by step to make sure that our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren (...) have a future to grow up in. Think about it and make a difference for all generations to come.

The best company in the world!

If you are wondering what company I consider being the best company in the world, it is Abercrombie&Fitch. If you ask me I would definitely say that it is the best known company worldwide when it comes to casual and summary clothing. It is an American retailer that is founded in New York in 1892. With its over 300 locations only in the United States, it focuses on consumers between 18 to 22 years. A&F attach great importance on the satisfaction of its customers and high quality garments. The company also operates three offshoot brands: Abercrombie kinds,  Gilly Hicks and Hollister Co., with unfortunately only the latter existing in Austria.
You've probably noticed their poster somewhere because it's very catchy and attracts your attention immediately when passing by (if you live in the US). A&F is known for its racy marketing photography that features outdoor settings, usually with semi-nude and thoroughly fit males and females for an increased tone of sexuality.

Anyways, now I want to talk about the best known youth brand in our surroundings - Hollister Co. Even if the brand pursues the technique of "walking self-marketing", you probably all know it since it is famous all over the world. The company has not relied on media marketing to communicate its desired look and appeal but rather on direct advertising wearing an item of clothing from HCo. This is notably achieved through the large screen-print of the brands name or the famous flying seagull logo on the majority of their merchandise. The Hollister-labeled shopping bag which is carried around by a big amount of people produces a similar effect.

HCo is an American lifestyle brand, launched in July 2000, which was ranked as the second most preferred clothing brand of US teens. Goods are available in-store as well as through the company's online store. In 2008 Hollister opened its first store outside of the U.S. and Canada in London. Due to the fact that the store stands out from any other store by its simulated appearance of vintage beach shacks in an indoor shopping mall, it is very easy to remember it. When a new store is opened you will always find semi-nude models standing outside the entrance promoting the brand with their typical red bathers.

When you walk in you will feel comfortable and welcome due to the sweet greeting by one of the store-models.  The whole atmosphere makes you feel as if you were on the beach: Surf boards are lining the wall behind the registers and potted palm trees are placed around the store. The smell of the current popular SoCal fragrance, which is very summery, and the surfer inspired tunes set the whole beach shack mood. Every Hollister store has installed video walls that play live-feed from Surf City Huntington Beach in California to provide customer with a flavor of the SoCal surf atmosphere HCo. promotes. The sepia toned images of Hollister provide a vintage feel that is adequate with the lifestyle promoted by the brand.

I must admit that I am totally enraptured with this brand and I am literally obsessed with their casual clothing. As I was walking through the shop to buy some new things I was addressed by a vendor if I was interested in working at Hollister. I agreed, of course, and after I applied for the job last week I am now recruited as a store-model in the shop in Graz. I am happy and really proud that from today I can consider myself being a part of this amazing company. =)
